The Technique – Perceptual Position
If you are an NLP Practitioner or NLP Life Coach or you know a bit of NLP, you might be familiar with the language we use, in asking the client how we can help them.
But, we do not ask them, “What is the problem?” or “What is the issue?”
In NLP, language matters a lot. And as a NLP Life Coach, we hold the responsibility to create new neural pathways in the client at every step. This begins at the first step, when we ask them how we can help them.
Instead, what we ask is, “What situation do you want to find more choices in?”
And now, let me share a great NLP Technique, which is used by the NLP trainers & NLP Life Coaches. Ridhima Dua has shared this in many webinars. To register a free seat for the upcoming webinar, click here
The technique is called as Perceptual Position.
Description of the technique
Here is how we use 3 positions in the technique to resolve & to get out of that stuck situation:
- 1st Position: In this position you will get into your stuck-state. Whatever, you may have a “problem” or an “issue”. Observe what you see, hear and feel in this position.
- 2nd Position: This position is for the person/commodity with whom you are stuck. This stuck position is where the other people are talking, watching, or doing something. It is an essential part of the stuck situation. I request you here, to leave 1st Position and become the other person or be in his/her shoes. See, hear, talk, stand, sit how they do it. Just getting into 2nd Position (cleanly) by disassociating yourself from 1st position, you will have a different perspective, and it gives you new choices/solutions in the stuck situation.
Final & 3rd Position:
There is you in the situation/stuck situation position 1, there are other people in the second position, and then there is a position of the on-lookers, the by-standers, the observers. This 3rd position has no involvement in either the issue or the people. This position sees and hears. So, the idea here is when you leave the first two positions, and get into this 3rd position, you become the observer. This is a position of curiosity, flexibility, and finding solutions. Have you noticed that you can be so good at finding solutions to problems that do not concern you? This is that powerful, 3rd position. Now, when you look at the stuck situation from 3rd position, you might find yourself with a completely different perspective, one that was not available to you before.
Here is the conclusion
Once you start doing this technique, you quickly become very good at it because the more you practice, the more you learn and experience it.
Me (Richa) & Ridhima both have utilized Perceptual Position in conversations, or as a technique for clients. Clients have achieved amazing breakthroughs for them because they did the exercise & not just read this piece of information which you are reading right now.
So, I suggest you to do this technique and experience it. Remember, NLP is all about experiencing & doing. Unless & until you do you will not learn NLP.
